The giant of Japanese auto, Nissan, has revealed plans to invest at least £2 billion in the production of electric cars in the United Kingdom, UK, News About Nigeria reports.

The President and CEO of Nissan, Makoto Uchida, made this known on Friday.

He said that the electric vehicles are part of the group’s plans to achieve carbon neutrality.

According to him, this was an exciting time for Nissan as the electric cars are a core version of Nissan’s European models, adding that the company was headed towards a new era.

Uchida further revealed that the company will be producing electric models of two best-selling cars, Juke and Qashqai, at its biggest factory in Europe, located at Sunderland, northeast England.

He maintained that this was in accordance with the UK net zero plans to switch away from dirty fossil-fuel vehicles.

This is coming as Britain looks forward to being at the forefront in the production of electric cars, even as companies and governments drift away from high-polluting automobiles.

The government, however, noted that Nissan’s investment was a sign of confidence in the UK’s automotive industry.

Speaking on the development, British Prime Minister. Rishi Sunak noted that the industry currently contributes about £71 billion a year to the economy of the country.

He also stated that the manufacturing and production of the electric cars will make Sunderland the ‘Silicon Valley’ of the United Kingdom.

Uchida, had earlier on in September, stated that the company’s plans to electrify cars will not be hindered, adding that its goal was to have a 98 per cent of European sales of electric vehicles by 2027.
