The Enugu state government has revealed that its transport project will add at least N47.5 billion to the economy of the state and country at large, News About Nigeria reports.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, made this known while unveiling the first phase of the Transport Infrastructure Project in the state on Sunday.
According to him, the transportation infrastructure project included several world-class bus terminals, transport interchanges, logistics hubs, city gates and rail stations that would ply across the state.
Ozor also added that the transportation project would, in addition to lifting the economy, provide both skilled and semi-skilled jobs for over 11,000 youths in the state.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to repositioning and remodelling the transport sector while making it one of the leading modern transportation systems in Africa, in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision for the state.
He further noted that the governor’s vision of leveraging transport and logistics in order to spur economic transportation was inspired by successful models in Dubai and Singapore.
Ozor added that the first phase of the transportation project, which was aimed at optimising transport efficiency and fostering a conducive environment for the growth of transport-related businesses, was with the intention of alleviating congestion and enhancing connectivity within the state.
This, he maintained, would be able to meet the rapidly urbanizing and growing population of the state.
He noted that major stakeholders whose properties could be affected, especially the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), had already been engaged by the governor with plans of compensation and assistance by the government.
According to him, he was optimistic that the project would curb criminal activities, enhance the security and safety of motorists and passengers, improve the sanitation system and eliminate the current gridlocks within the metropolis.
