The Ogun State Police Command has issued a stern warning against the use of fireworks, stating that anyone caught engaging in such activities will face severe consequences.
News About Nigeria gathered that the caution comes in response to numerous complaints from residents, particularly in areas like Sagamu, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, and Sango Ota, who expressed concerns about the disruptive noise of fireworks, likened to gunfire, impacting their peace and causing anxiety.
In an official statement, SP Omolola Odutola, the police spokesperson, emphasised the need for residents to cease the tradition of using fireworks, especially considering the heightened security concerns in the state.
While acknowledging the cultural significance of fireworks during end-of-year celebrations, the police stressed the importance of prioritising security and tranquillity in the community.
The statement revealed that the Ogun State Police Command has been receiving reports of distress since November 1, 2023, regarding the indiscriminate use of dangerous fireworks.
CP Alamutu Abiodun, the Commissioner of Police, has consequently imposed a ban on the unrestrained use of explosive fireworks. The move is aimed at addressing residents’ complaints about the disruptive impact of fireworks, causing confusion with actual gunshots and resulting in sleepless nights and constant terror.
Residents have been urged to be considerate of their neighbours’s privacy and peace.
The Commissioner of Police warned that anyone violating the directive does so at their own peril, emphasising that the use of certain fireworks, locally known as ‘banger’, is now considered a criminal act. Punitive measures will be enforced for deliberate violations in accordance with existing laws.
