The Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party in the November 11 Off-cycle election, Senator Athan Achonu, has said that democracy in Nigeria is under attack, News About Nigeria reports.

According to him, with the conduct of Saturday’s election in Imo state, it is now very clear that manipulators and criminals who masquerade themselves as politicians don’t want democracy to thrive in Nigeria.

“The All Progressives Congress government should be ashamed of themselves. They have lost the election, and they are trying to change the result. Democracy is under attack, but we are resisting it,” he stated.

He decried the conduct of the governorship election in the state and also alleged that a high level of electoral manipulation took place during the election.

According to Achonu, in so many polling units where elections took place on Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officials had different excuses like; the inability to upload results to give the people so as to manipulate the result.

The Labour Party flagbearer in the governorship election further alleged that INEC, in connivance with the All Progressives Congress, APC, are doing everything in their power to manipulate the votes of the people who trooped out in their mass to vote for him.

He also charged INEC to declare the result of Saturday’s election as they are without any change.

Achonu also noted that despite attempts by the opposition to disrupt the election, the people of Imo state came out in their mass on Saturday because they wanted to experience proper democracy and good governance.
