Former senior special adviser to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has revealed that a parliamentary system of government is necessary for accountability, News About Nigeria reports.
Akande, who made this known on Friday in an interview on Channel Television’s Sunrise Daily, noted that this would bring about more representation and improve the issue of accountability.
The former SSA urged the government to make political offices less attractive and encourage part-time engagement.
He maintained that it is possible to have people in political offices, not full-time, in the Nigerian government, noting that this would make governance in the country cheaper.
Recall that Akande had, earlier on, urged President Bola Tinubu to openly admit that the country’s electoral process needed a lot of fixing.
He noted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did promise Nigerians that the results of the 2023 election would be on the IREV but went back on their promise to Nigerians as the results were not uploaded.
According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had the task of rebuilding the trust of Nigerians in it’s institution and called on the president to come out to condemn the poor job done by the electoral umpire.
He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should follow the steps of one of his predecessors, President Yar’Adua, and come out to tell the people that he understands their plights and that there is need to fix the electoral process.
He further noted that INEC has been able to explain to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT, justices that it was not compelled by the law to transmit the results because it was only a promise and not a law.
