In a step towards addressing the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Benue State, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, laid the foundation for cluster settlements on Thursday, News About Nigeria reports.
The minister, who embarked on a two-day visit to the state, unveiled plans for constructing the settlement in Mbagwen, Makurdi Local Government Area.
Assuring the people of Benue State of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to resettling the displaced persons, Minister Edu expressed the president’s concern for those who have been forced from their ancestral homes.
She emphasised that it was time for Benue residents to experience relief after enduring prolonged suffering.
“This is the beginning of a journey to return home. President Tinubu had promised to work with Governor Hyacinth Alia to return the people home, and today is the beginning of the fulfilment of that promise,” Edu stated.
Acknowledging the pain experienced by the displaced individuals, the minister emphasised the president’s desire for them to return to dignified homes rather than makeshift shelters.
She emphasised the importance of empowering the people financially, allowing them to build their homes and contribute to the nation’s food production.
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State commended President Tinubu for keeping his commitment to resettling the people.
He urged patience from the residents, highlighting the persistent attacks on the community since 2010, with heightened incidents in 2016.
The cluster settlement initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution for those displaced, offering them the opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute to national food security.
