Following the horrific attack on the NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called an exceptional National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to discuss the details of an organized strike.
The conference will also go over the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Federal Government and Organised Labour on October 2, 2023, in response to the elimination of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy, which the Labour centres claim has brought “untold hardship” to Nigerians.
Tommy Etim, the TUC’s National Vice-President, stated this in an interview on Tuesday afternoon.
“We will be holding an extraordinary NEC meeting any moment now. The injustice meted out to comrade Ajaero, the scheduled strike, and the MOU inked with the Federal Government are among the modalities to be discussed. More information will be released following the meeting”, he stated.
News About Nigeria gathered that organised labour, which includes the NLC and the TUC, issued a five-day ultimatum on Friday in response to the earlier arrest of the NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, by police in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday.
The labour centres requested the redeployment of the state’s commissioner of police, as well as the arrest and prosecution of the government aide accused of carrying out the attack.
The unions also warned of a national strike if their demands were not realised within five days from Friday.
On Wednesday, Ajaero was viciously beaten during a state-wide demonstration in Imo.
When he was later released from police custody, in a video that went viral, Ajaero was seen narrating how he was brutalised by security operatives after he was whisked away by the operatives for no particular reason.
