The Sokoto state government on Friday announced that they seized over 1,200 jerrycans of adulterated cooking oil at the Central Market in the state, News About Nigeria reports.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Health, Asabe Balarabe.
The statement further disclosed that the state also intercepted another five truckloads of the adulterated oil that had been taken to the state capital.
According to the Commissioner, the state government confiscated the adulterated oil in order to safeguard the health and well-being of its citizens.
She, therefore, warned members of the public to desist from buying such products as they can cause great harm to their health.
In her words, “Members of the public are hereby advised to desist from buying the adulterated commodities in the state, as such food commodities are proven to be causing health problems including cancer of various types, which do not manifest immediately.
“They equally cause other slow manifesting diseases like kidney disease as well as immediate diseases like Diarrhea and vomiting among others.”
Balarabe also charged residents of the state to be vigilant and report any suspected adulterated goods to the security agencies or the Ministry of Health in this state.
The commissioner further warned marketers in the state to not sell adulterated commodities, noting that failure to comply with this would attract the full wrath of the law.
He also charged members of the public to remain calm, noting that the situation is under control as the government is taking proactive steps towards ensuring that the state is rid of such adulterated oil.
