The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened to sue the Bola Tinubu-led government over the continued detention of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero.
Issuing this threat in a statement made available on its official Twitter handle on Wednesday, the rights organization asked the Nigerian police to immediately release the labour leader or face legal action.
“The Tinubu administration must immediately and unconditionally release the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, who is reportedly arrested today in Owerri, Imo State. We’ll see in court if he is not immediately released,” a statement by SERAP read.
However, the Imo State Police Command has debunked reports that it arrested the labour leader.
In a statement on Wednesday, Okoye Henry, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, clarified that the NLC president was not arrested but was rather taken into protective custody.
The police explained that there were plans to instigate mob action against the union leader, hence the need for swift intervention from men of the Imo State Police Command.
News About Nigeria recalls that Mr Ajaero had flown down to Imo to join the state-wide protest against the ill-treatment by Governor Hope Uzodinma.
His arrests came barely hours after the Imo State government advised the NLC’s national leadership not to stir the fires of discord between it and state workers.
Joe Ajaero alleged that workers who gathered peacefully to conduct the state delegates’ conference of the NLC were attacked by sponsored thugs in conjunction with security agencies.
