A former aide during the administration led by Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s N5 billion budget for a presidential yacht.
News About Nigeria gathered that President Bola Tinubu had budgeted N5 billion for the purchase of a Presidential Yacht and another N5.5 billion for the Education Loan Fund as part of the implementation of the Higher Education Access Act, 2023, otherwise known as the Students Loan Act.
Reacting to the budget for the yacht, Omokri stated that such a move by Tinubu to buy a presidential yacht is insensitive because Nigerians are currently suffering.
He further stated that such a move shows that President Tinubu lacks empathy, which is why he is spending such a huge amount at a time when soldiers fighting the war on terror are dying, civil servants’ take-home pay can no longer cover their expenses, and fuel and food inflation is approaching 30%.
Omokri also stated that “He supported the administration’s floating of the Naira because Nigeria cannot continue spending $1.5 billion monthly to defend the Naira. But if we have to float the Naira, why should the President float on water in a new yacht? What is the urgency, necessity, and decency of such a purchase when there are Nigerians all over the Northwest, North Central, and Northeast who are internally displaced by insecurity and whose needs for shelter far outweigh the President’s need for a new aquatic toy?”
The former aide, therefore, urged President Tinubu to stop the purchase of the yacht if he genuinely loves the nation, noting that it is not too late to do so for the good of the nation.
Omokri further stated that he will celebrate the President when he does well and will also call him out when he goes astray.
