Zacch Adedeji has emerged as the new Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The Senate confirmed his appointment as Chairman on Tuesday, News about Nigeria reports.
President Bola Tinubu wrote to the Senate on Tuesday, urging them to expedite his confirmation.
Adedeji had earlier revealed plans to reevaluate tax credit schemes and waivers in the country, citing the lack of information in the oil and gas sector. He made this known during his screening process.
This comes after lawmakers expressed concerns that the supposed schemes had been abused, resulting in the loss of billions of naira in revenue.
The new Chairman, however, assured Nigerians that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) would take all necessary steps to put an end to the recurring issues while ensuring a significant improvement in the country’s tax revenue.
The FIRS boss also promised to halt most of the leakages in the oil industry. According to him, the core problem in the country is the lack of proper data. He added that developing a database for decision-making is fundamental.
He maintained that it would enable sufficient information on the exact number of crude vessels brought into the country and the corresponding tax. The data would be used to identify those in affluence who pay insufficient tax, the FIRS boss added.
Adedeji also vowed to centralize the identification system in Nigeria and advance the nation’s data mining capacity.
