The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended two minors on allegations of setting their school in the Isheri-Olofin area of Ifo Local Government Area on fire.

News About Nigeria gathered that the incident, which took place on October 29, 2023, resulted in damage to the school’s books and property.

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, disclosed this development in an official statement on Sunday.

She explained that the minors, aged six and nine, who are both residents of Isheri Olofin, were taken into custody following their involvement in the act.

According to Odutola, the young students, pupils of Community Primary School, Isheri Olofin, gained access to one of the unlocked classrooms.

They then proceeded to gather books left behind by the teachers and pupils before setting them on fire. The exact value of the damaged books is currently unknown.

“A chief in the community reported the incident to the police,” Odutola said. “Upon receiving the report, the Anti-Crime and Detectives Unit visited the scene and brought the alleged children to the police station for interrogation.”

The police spokesperson also stated that the parents of the minors would be invited for questioning regarding the circumstances surrounding their children’s actions.

She emphasised the seriousness of the situation, given the young age of the children involved.

“The police have started making inquiries on how to contact their parents as this is a very serious crime for these children to get themselves involved with,” Odutola added.

“The police will unravel and update members of the public in due course if there are other persons who may have instigated the youngsters.”
