Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has warned Nigerian lawmakers that Nigerians will soon become fed up and begin an uprising against politicians.
Issuing this warning in response to reports of plans to purchase exotic SUVs for federal lawmakers, Ezekwesili, displeased with the report, wondered why the lawmakers would have the audacity to spend scarce public funds on luxury cars when Nigerians were battling with the hardships occasioned by the recent removal of fuel subsidy.
“You all had the audacity to spend scarce public resources on luxury cars at a time when the majority of your citizens cannot feed, transport themselves, pay school fees, and hospital bills due to the cost of living crisis?” Ezekwesili asked.
“Just know that a day cometh, and very soon too, when it will be your fed-up Nigerian citizens and not the military who will rise up and collectively chase all of you grossly irresponsible and insensitive people out of office,” she added.
News About Nigeria reports that the former education minister suggested that the development was an indication that Nigerian lawmakers are the biggest threat to democracy.
Ezekwesili is not the first to condemn the move. News About Nigeria recalls that the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, had earlier condemned President Bola Tinubu’s government for planning to take on fresh loans to fund the country’s lampooning budget.
Moghalu advised that the government should immediately stop plans to purchase exotic cars for the national lawmakers instead of taking on loans to fund the cost of governance.
