A cholera outbreak has surged through Zimbabwe, raising concerns as approximately 100 lives are suspected to have been claimed by the disease, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health, News About Nigeria reports.
The largest outbreak since 2018 has been attributed to unsanitary conditions and obstructed sewage systems, as reported by the government. To date, a total of 4,609 cases are under suspicion, with 935 of them confirmed as cholera and 30 fatalities have been officially linked to the waterborne ailment. Just in June, neighboring South Africa grappled with its most severe diarrheal illness outbreak in 15 years, and earlier in the year, Malawi also faced a cholera outbreak.
This resurgence of cholera stirs painful memories of the devastating 2008-2009 outbreak in Zimbabwe, where over 4,000 lives were tragically lost to the disease.
