The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) is set to kick off its 2023/24 season on Saturday, September 30, nationwide.

This announcement comes as the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, revealed some key details in a letter addressed to the 20 participating clubs and league stakeholders.

In the letter, Owumi disclosed that the champions of the upcoming season would receive a significantly increased prize of ₦150 million, marking a 50% rise from the previous season’s reward which saw the winners take home ₦100 million.

News About Nigeria reports that additionally, each of the 20 participating clubs will receive a take-off grant of ₦10 million to support their operations as the new season begins. This is believed to help the team’s foot logistics bills for their games.

Owumi emphasized the importance of a quick response from the clubs, urging them to provide their account details to the NPFL secretariat to facilitate the transfer of the start-off grants.

He said, “We are, therefore, expecting the clubs to, as a matter of urgency, forward their respective account details to the NPFL secretariat for the transfer of the said amount, as the season is set to commence on Saturday, September 30, 2023.”

Regarding the increased prize money, the letter explained, “After due deliberations by the chairman and our strategic partners, it was agreed that the prize money, since that is what connotes the true value of the league, be reviewed upwards to N150 million.”

The letter also addressed marketing concerns and reassured the clubs that the NPFL board would consistently make decisions and enter into contracts that serve the best interests of both the league and the participating clubs.
