Former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu has hailed the students of the University of Calabar for speaking up against a senior lecturer of the institution for the habit of sexually exploiting female students of the institution.
Hailing the students in a tweet made available on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, Mr Moghalu who frowned at the menace of sex exploitation in higher institutions of learning called on relevant authorities to take a very strong zero-tolerance stand to stamp out the menace.
“Sexual exploitation of female students by university/other tertiary institution lecturers is now an epidemic in Nigeria. The relevant authorities need to take very strong zero-tolerance steps to stamp out the scourge. Kudos to #UniCal students for taking a stand against predators,” Mr Moghalu said.
News About Nigeria understands that Professor Cyril Ndifon, dean of the law faculty at the University of Calabar, was placed on administrative leave following claims of sexual harassment. Following a review of the claims of sexual harassment made against Ndifon by female faculty members on Monday, the school’s administration decided to suspend him immediately from August 17, 2023.
Students from the faculty were seen storming the vice chancellor’s office in a viral video posted to social media. They were carrying signs that read, “Ndifon must go for our sanity,” “We are tired of buying law journals,” “We are tired of lecturers not attending classes,” and “Law girls are not your bonanza; Prof. Ndifon should stop grabbing us and others.”
The University don has however denied the allegations claiming that the protest was organised by those holding grudges against him.
