Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has opened up about the emotional toll of performing without proper vocal care. The artist, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, spoke about her experience in a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, News About Nigeria Reports.
Starr revealed that she was going through a lot during a live performance several months ago, and was not properly taking care of her voice. She admitted to not doing vocal warm-ups and not speaking at all before going on stage. Despite finding it difficult to sing for two months, Starr continued to perform, leading to criticism from fans who believed she could not sing.
Starr said, “Sometimes I’m not even talking at all, then I’m just on stage and I’m shouting and singing. I couldn’t properly sing for like two months. And I was performing every day still with that voice. So, people literally were like, Ayra cannot sing. I’m like, it is not as if I can not sing o, I’m going through a lot.”
Starr’s experience highlights the importance of proper vocal care for performers. Vocal warm-ups are essential for preparing the voice for singing, and neglecting them can lead to strain and damage over time. Adequate rest, hydration, and nutrition are also crucial for maintaining vocal health and stamina.
Performing can take an emotional toll on a performer’s voice as well. Starr’s experience is a reminder that even the most successful and talented performers can experience setbacks due to neglecting their vocal care.
