Following the December 1 strike notice from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to states that have yet to implement the new minimum wage, the Taraba State Government has approved N70,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state.

The approval of the minimum wage was announced in a statement by the state Head of Service, Paul Maigida Tino, on Wednesday.

According to Tino, the payment of the new minimum wage will be effective starting November 2024.

He further noted that the delay in approving the new minimum wage was not due to the government abandoning workers, as they remain committed to supporting workers’ welfare and aspirations.

The statement partly reads, “I wish to inform you that His Excellency, the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the implementation of a N70,000 new minimum wage for workers in Taraba State, effective from November 2024, in line with his administration’s dedication to meeting the yearnings and aspirations of workers.”

News About Nigeria recalls that the seven states that have yet to approve the new minimum wage are Zamfara, Sokoto, Osun, Cross River, Imo, Plateau, Taraba, and the FCT.

However, with the approval by the Taraba state government, only six states remain.

Meanwhile, paying the N70,000 minimum wage may take longer in Zamfara, as the state only just began paying the previous N30,000 minimum wage.

It is worth recalling that the N30,000 minimum wage took effect in April 2019, but Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State only commenced payments to civil servants in June of this year.
