The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, have arrived in Nigeria after their devastating ordeal in Libya.
News About Nigeria earlier reported that the Nigerian team, which had travelled to Libya for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, was left stranded for about 13 hours at a Libyan airport ahead of the game, which was supposed to take place on Tuesday.
According to some of the Super Eagles players who had taken to social media to vent, they were left stranded with no food or even where to sleep, making them sleep on benches at the airport.
Following this torture, the team decided that they were not going to play the match on the grounds that they were not able to eat or even rest to prepare for Tuesday’s match.
In support of this, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) released a statement announcing the team’s decision to not participate in the match and to also return to the country.
The statement partly reads, “The Nigerian delegation for Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya is still at Al Abraq Airport, 12 hours after landing. The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport just as the pilot was completing his approach to Benghazi Airport.
“Players have resolved not to play the match any longer, and NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home.”
Following this decision, the Nigerian team has now landed in Kano after their flight was cleared to take off.
The Valuejet CRJ-900LR aircraft, with registration number 5N-BXT, touched down at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.
The team departed Beida Al Abraq International Airport in Libya at 3:14 pm.
