National Assembly Summons Members For Emergency Plenary Session

The Nigerian National Assembly has announced an emergency plenary session for Wednesday, July 31, 2024, to address pressing matters that demand immediate legislative attention.

News About Nigeria reports that this decision was made public by the House of Representatives’ spokesperson, Rotimi Akin, in a statement released on Monday.

According to Akin, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., has directed that all members be summoned from their constituencies to attend this critical session.

The Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq., issued an internal memorandum on Sunday, notifying members of the scheduled plenary.

The National Assembly began its annual recess on July 23, 2024, which provides members with an opportunity to engage with their constituents and ensure that the legislative process reflects public input.

However, due to the urgency of the matters at hand, the House is reconvening to address critical issues that require immediate attention.

Akin said that it is customary for the House to reconvene during recess to address pressing national issues.

He urged members to make necessary arrangements to ensure their presence at the forthcoming session.

In a similar development, the Senate has also announced an emergency plenary session for Wednesday, as indicated in a memo from the Clerk of the Senate, Francis Akubueze, to Senators.

The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that the plenary session be convened to discuss issues of national importance.

Both chambers of the National Assembly had previously adjourned plenary till September 17, but the urgency of the matters at hand has necessitated this extraordinary session.

Members are expected to make necessary arrangements to attend, and the plenary session will be held by noon on Wednesday.
