National Grid Back Online After Partial Outage, Confirms TCN

Nigeria has witnessed its fourth power grid collapse in 2024, as electricity generation on the system collapsed.

News About Nigeria reports that the country is currently generating 0.80 megawatts of electricity.

A check on the website of Independent System Operator, an autonomous arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), indicated that power plant contribution to the grid began to decline around 2 pm to 2,797.16 MW from the average of 3,417.99 MW around 1 pm.

The electricity contribution further declined to 1,020.08 around 3 pm before dramatically falling to 0.80 by 4 pm.

It was gathered that the 0.80 was generated by the Trans-Amadi Power Plant.

On February 5, 2024, it was reported that power generation on the national grid crashed to 59.9 MW around noon on February 4, 2024, as the country’s grid witnessed a nationwide collapse.

The report stated that data obtained from the Federal Ministry of Power showed that electricity generation on the grid plunged from 2,658.75 MW at 11 am to 59.9 MW by noon on February 4, 2024, as power distributors lost supply from the grid.

This led to widespread blackouts across the country, as power distribution companies blamed it on the collapse of the grid managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, an agency of the Federal Government.

In 2023, Nigeria experienced power outages. The national grid collapsed twice in September of that year and once in December.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane, said the national grid collapsed 12 times in 2023.

“The national grid collapsed 12 times in 2023,” he said during Channels TV’s Special end-of-Year programme tagged “2023: Year of Transition.”
