Lagos Governor Mourns Iwuanyanwu

The Governor of Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed plans to establish a medical university in the state, News About Nigeria reports.

The governor disclosed this while inaugurating the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital on Tuesday in Surulere, Lagos.

He noted that the university will boost the training of health professionals and, at the same time, address the problem of brain drain that is currently ongoing in the health sector.

He maintained that it was a bold initiative his administration was willing to take in 2024, adding that it is a strategic intervention both for the state and the nation at large.

The governor further disclosed that establishing the medical university would bring about a scale-up in the number of doctors that graduated every year, noting that he was targeting graduating between 1,000 and 1,500 doctors every year.

He also stated that his administration will partner with the Federal Ministry of Health to scale up all training and ensure that the youth are trained in everything within the health space.

He urged other states to borrow a leaf and also replicate this initiative and set up similar universities, adding that it would bring about a reduction in the trend of medical personnel leaving the country.

He noted that with the support of President Bola Tinubu, the medical university project will be completed before the end of 2024.

While commending the hospital for facilitating and handing over the secondary health facility to the state government, Sanwo-Olu noted that the hospital would improve access to healthcare.
