#EndBadGovernance Protest: Sowore Calls For Punishment For Unlawful Prosecutions

Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for sanctions against the Nigerian state for the unlawful prosecution of protesters involved in the EndBadGovernance protests, News About Nigeria reports.

He made this call in a statement via his verified handle on X on Wednesday.

This follows the Federal High Court in Abuja granting bail to the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria activists, with bail set at N10 million each, along with sureties who must possess landed property.

It is important to recall that ten individuals who participated in the ten-day protests across Nigeria in August 2024 were charged with treason and other serious offenses at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Sowore criticized the Federal Government for subjecting citizens to what he described as egregious false charges and detaining them indefinitely based on these false accusations.

According to Sowore, the government often secures prison sentences during trial proceedings against innocent citizens, fully aware from the outset that no evidence of wrongdoing exists.

He, therefore, insisted that the Nigerian state must be held accountable for these prosecutorial abuses by punishing unethical judges, prosecutors, and arresting authorities, including the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS, and others.

The statement reads in part: “It is a disgrace that citizens are subjected to the most egregious false charges and detained indefinitely over them. At times, lives are completely destroyed, and no one is held accountable for these unjust prosecutions.

“What the Nigerian state does with these bogus charges is to secure prison sentences during the trial stages against innocent citizens, knowing from the start that there is no evidence of wrongdoing. A fair trial without proof is an impossible task, even before some of their most incompetent kangaroo judges.”
