The federal government has urged aviation unions to suspend their planned protests over the deduction of 50% of the internally generated revenue (IGR) from aviation agencies, News About Nigeria reports.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the appeal in a statement on Friday, reassuring stakeholders and unions of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing their concerns.
Keyamo stated that President Tinubu is deeply concerned about improving the aviation sector and will carefully consider the unions’ demands.
He said that the government intends to find a solution that balances the fiscal needs of the government with the operational requirements of the aviation agencies.
“We appeal to all workers to remain calm and maintain industrial peace while the government is working diligently towards an amicable resolution,” Keyamo stated.
He also stated that the ministry appreciates the patience and understanding shown by the workers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a conducive work environment.
Keyamo acknowledged the unions’ concerns about the negative impact of the revenue deductions on investments, maintenance of critical infrastructure, and the overall operations of the aviation agencies.
He assured them that the government is fully aware of these issues and is committed to addressing them in a way that ensures the continued viability and sustainability of the sector.
“The Honourable Minister wishes to assure the workers’ unions and other stakeholders that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is very concerned about the improvement of the aviation sector and will give their demands due consideration with the goal of finding a lasting solution that balances both the fiscal needs of the government and the operational requirements of the aviation agencies.
“We appeal to all workers to remain calm and maintain industrial peace while the government is working assiduously towards amicably resolving the matter. The Ministry appreciates their patience and understanding and remains committed to ensuring a conducive work environment for all,” the statement read.
The statement concluded by thanking the aviation workers for their understanding and continued dedication to the sector.
