The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) have started a campaign to stop people from defecating in the open along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The Lagos State Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the campaign will help prevent the spread of diseases like cholera.
He said that the campaign would also make the area look nicer and more pleasant.
The campaign will focus on the area between OPIC Plaza and the Otedola Bridge and will involve working with local stakeholders to monitor and report any violations.
The LASEPA General Manager, Babatunde Ajayi, said that educating the public about the dangers of open defecation is crucial, especially during the rainy season.
Ajayi said that this is because the risk of getting sick from waterborne diseases increases during this time.
He affirmed that LASEPA will work with local governments, health officers, market women, and law enforcement to monitor the environment and report any infractions.
Also, OGEPA General Manager Oluwadare Kehinde praised LASEPA’s initiative, saying that working together is important for solving environmental problems.
Kehinde said this campaign sets a good example of how states can work together to tackle common issues.
He added that Ogun State is partnering with international organisations to build more public restrooms, intending to completely eliminate open defecation. This will help keep the environment clean and healthy.
Wahab concluded that the joint campaign by Lagos and Ogun states represents a proactive effort to combat open defecation and improve public health.
