Ex-Convict Nabbed On Military Uniform In Akwa Ibom

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State has arrested one Edidiong Matthew, an ex-convict, found in military uniform.

News About Nigeria reports that this was contained in a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John.

In the statement, John said the 35-year-old suspect, who is an indigene of Ikot Ekong in the Mkpat Enin local government area of the state, was apprehended following intelligence reports by members of the public.

The statement was made accessible to journalists on Thursday in Uyo, the state capital.

The statement noted that the suspect had been involved in a series of criminal activities.

The statement reads, “On 05/06/2024 at about 14:00hrs, police operatives of the command on crime prevention patrol arrested one Eddiong Anthony Matthew ‘M’, a 35-year-old indigene of Ikot Ekong Village in Mkpat Enin LGA, in half-dress military camouflage.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is an ex-convict who had been perpetrating a series of crimes in the state in military uniform with a warrant officer rank.”

John said a walkie-talkie, cell phones, a brown coverall dress, and ID cards suspected to have been stolen from victims were recovered from him.

“One walkie-talkie, phones suspected to have been stolen from his victims, a brown cover – all dress, RCC ID Card were recovered.”

The statement added that the suspect would be charged in court on completion of the investigation into the matter, stressing the command’s readiness to intensify efforts to rid the state of other fleeing criminals from their wanted lists.

“This follows the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Waheed Ayilara’s affirmation of the command’s unwavering commitment and dedication to making Akwa Ibom inhabitable for criminals,” the statement noted.

Recall that in May, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned David Ikeaghichi for allegedly impersonating an Afghanistan soldier to commit internet fraud.

He was arraigned in the federal high court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money under pretence.
