Passengers Stranded, Flights Stalled As Aviation Workers Joins Ongoing Nationwide Strike

On Monday, workers in the aviation sector joined the ongoing nationwide strike across states in the Federation which was declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Following the decision of workers in the aviation sector to join the strike, the organised labour has shut down all entry points of aviation agencies at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to push their demands for the implementation of a new national minimum wage.

The shutdown has, in turn, affected flight operations at the airport as airlines and passengers were left stranded at the airport entrances.

The passengers who were scheduled to travel today can no longer embark on their journeys as they couldn’t gain entrance into the airport.

Recall that the nationwide strike began after the organised labour, in a statement on Friday, announced an indefinite nationwide strike in response to the federal government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

Speaking for the Congress, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero revealed that the strike would commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

According to a joint statement by the NLC President and his TUC counterpart, Festus Ododo, the strike became imperative following the federal government’s failure to finalise and enact a new national minimum wage act and to reverse the increase in electricity tariffs to N65/kWh.

News About Nigeria reports that, asides from the aviation sector, other unions that have joined the ongoing strike include, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, the National Union of Electricity Employees, and National Union of Banks, Insurance.

Others are, Financial Institutions Employees, Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Joint Union Action Committee, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, National Associations of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives and Joint Health Sector Unions.
