A Nigerian pilgrim from Kebbi State passed away in Mecca on Saturday, May 25, following a brief illness, an official announced.

According to the statement released, the deceased is identified as Tawakaltu Alako from Jega Local Government Area.

News About Nigeria reports that her funeral prayer took place at the Al-Masjid Al-Haram (Ka’aba) as she was buried according to Islamic rites on the same day.

The death was confirmed by Aliyu Tanko, the Nigerian Makkah Office Coordinator, in a condolence message on behalf of the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), Jalal Arabi.

Mr. Tanko expressed heartfelt condolences to the Kebbi State Government Pilgrim Welfare Board and prayed for the soul of the deceased to rest in eternal peace.

In a show of solidarity, a NAHCON delegation, including Saudi Liaison Officer Abubakar Lamin and other staff, visited the Kebbi State Welfare Board in Mecca.

The delegation was warmly received by the Chairman, Garba Takware.

Mr. Takware thanked the NAHCON leadership for their visit and their support during this difficult time.

He also prayed for a successful Hajj operation and the safety of all pilgrims.

A special supplication was made for the soul of the deceased, other pilgrims, and the nation of Nigeria.

Kebbi State pilgrims were among the first group of Nigerian pilgrims to arrive in Saudi Arabia for the 2024 Hajj, with their inaugural airlift taking place on May 15. 

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima.

To date, 20,154 Nigerian pilgrims have been transported to Saudi Arabia in 48 flights, with approximately 65,000 expected to participate in the 2024 Hajj.
