Amaechi Muonagor: Kanayo O Kanayo Mourns Colleague

Renowned Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor, has passed away at the age of 62 after battling a prolonged illness, News About Nigeria reports.

This was disclosed by social commentator Morris Monye via his X handle on Sunday.

Muonagor reportedly succumbed to complications arising from kidney failure, for which he had been undergoing dialysis treatments.

The news of his demise comes as a shock, particularly in the wake of a recent viral video where he appealed for funds to undergo a kidney transplant.

Expressing his grief, Monye stated, “Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful. We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India. This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country.”

Last week, fellow actor Kingsley Orji took to his Instagram account to appeal for assistance on behalf of Muonagor, who was discharged from the hospital due to financial constraints.

He stated that Muonagor was in urgent need of financial support to undergo a kidney transplant procedure in India.

Orji said Muonagor’s health struggles had affected his speech and overall well-being.

Speaking in both Igbo and English, Orji shared, “It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now. He wants to go for a kidney transplant. What we want is for you to help us for him to travel to India. He just came back from the ICU in Nnewi Teaching Hospital a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well. We decided to bring him home because there was no money but it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please, he needs your help.”

While the exact amount required for the transplant surgery was not disclosed, Orji provided Muonagor’s bank details and contact information for those willing to contribute.

Born on August 20, 1962, in Idemili, Anambra State, Muonagor was a distinguished actor and producer.

In 2016, he earned a nomination for the AMVCA 2017 Best Actor in a Comedy category.

Muonagor ventured into acting in 1989 after completing his youth service.

He left his job at the News Agency of Nigeria shortly afterward to pursue his passion for acting, making his debut as Akunatakasi in ‘Taboo 1’, a Nigerian movie.
