How Olamide, Empire Conspired Against Me – Fireboy DML

Nigerian singer Fireboy DML has said that his label boss, Olamide, conspired against him with American distribution company Empire to leak his hit single, Peru.

News About Nigeria gathered that the revelation came during an interview with Beat FM.

Fireboy DML expressed gratitude for having Olamide in his life, describing it as a blessing because the YBNL boss is always there to provide guidance when needed.

However, he acknowledged that there might not always be an Olamide around because the rapper also has his life to live.

He said, “Having Olamide in my life is a blessing because when I am overthinking stuff, he is always there to guide me.

“But there won’t always be an Olamide. This is an individual who has his family and things. He won’t always be there to guide me. Sometimes you have to make the decision.”

Fireboy stated that he was unsure about ‘Peru’ because he recorded the song in 45 minutes and needed about a week to touch up on a few things.

Despite his reservations, Olamide threatened to leak the song if Fireboy did not release it promptly, a threat that the YBNL boss fulfilled.

“I didn’t like Peru at first. I didn’t even want to drop it. I needed one week to touch up a few things. In my head, a song that I made in 35, 40 minutes while tipsy, you don’t drop that kind of song. But Olamide was like ‘if you dont drop this, I’lll leak it’. Like play, he did,” Fireboy said.

Despite the unconventional release, Fireboy DML noted that the public’s positive reaction to ‘Peru’ made him realise that not all songs have to undergo extensive vetting.

“I woke up and saw that they really did this thing. Empire and Olamide just conspired against me and just dropped the song. When I saw people’s reaction, I was like nice, people really like this stuff.

“That was the moment for me that made me think that not all songs have to be written and really vetted. Sometimes, music is freedom. Sometimes, that drunken, tipsy side of you is what really needs that song to have that flavour,” he said.

‘Peru’ was initially released on July 20, 2021.

Subsequently, on December 23, 2021, Fireboy DML collaborated with English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, for a revised work.

Fireboy initiated the remix collaboration with Sheeran through SB.TV founder Jamal Edwards.

The music video for this Sheeran version was released via YouTube on December 24, 2021.

Additionally, another remix, featuring rappers 21 Savage and Blxst, was later introduced.

The song earned a nomination for Song of the Year at the 7th annual African Entertainment Awards USA.
