Subair Enitan, a 200-level student in the Department of Linguistics and African Languages at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been hospitalized after completing her 58-hour hand wash-a-thon.
Enitan, who embarked on a handwashing marathon to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) on Friday, was rushed to the hospital on Monday after surpassing her initial 50-hour goal.
A trending video circulating on social media reveals that Enitan’s hands have turned white and wrinkled as a result of the handwashing marathon.
Enitan was captured lying in a bed in a medical ward.
Confirming Enitan’s hospitalisation, the Student Union President of OAU, Abbas Akinremi, explained that she was taken to the school’s clinic immediately after ending her hand wash-a-thon.
She said, “She ended the wash-a-thon in the early hours of Monday, and we took her to the university clinic.”
Also, a post on the official X handle for the marathon disclosed that the event concluded after 58 hours, surpassing her initial plan of 50 hours, and they are awaiting a response from the Guinness World Record.
News About Nigeria gathered that Enitan had notified the Guinness World Record of her intentions to embark on the wash-a-thon in June this year; however, November 24th, 2023, was approved for her attempt.
Following the approval from GWR, Enitan gained the support of Aspira Nigeria Limited, which provided her with detergents, soaps, washing bowls, and other items for her hand wash-a-thon to become a reality.
Speaking on the company’s support, the regional sales manager of Aspira Nigeria Limited, Joseph Adeyemi, said the organization takes pleasure in supporting the vision of young enterprising Nigerians aiming to break new ground.
Additionally, the management of OAU, led by the deputy vice-chancellor administration, Prof Abayomi Daramola, showed their support for Enitan by paying her a solidarity visit on Sunday, November 26, 2023, before the conclusion of the task on Monday.
