The Nigerian Senate is gearing up to amend the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections, seeking to introduce diaspora voting, primarily for presidential elections, News About Nigeria gathered.
This amendment is aimed at allowing Nigerian citizens living abroad, particularly those serving in essential roles such as the military, paramilitary, security personnel, embassy staff, and other citizens, to participate in the electoral process.
This change comes after a series of demands and agitations surrounding the inclusion of the Nigerian diaspora in the country’s electoral decisions.
In a communiqué released after its retreat in Ikot Ikpene, Akwa-Ibom state, the Senate also resolved to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory from the next general elections in 2027.
This mandate includes uploading polling unit-level results and result sheets used at various levels of result collation.
During events preceding and following the election that brought President Bola Tinubu into office, there were extensive calls for allowing Nigerians abroad to participate in the country’s electoral processes.
Additionally, there was widespread support for electronically transmitting results from the BVAS (Biometric Voter Accreditation System) machines.
The Senate also emphasised the need to unbundle the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness in the preparation and conduct of elections.
In a bid to address the country’s economic challenges, the Senate proposed the enactment of an Emergency Economic Intervention Bill.
This bill would address issues such as foreign exchange management, inflation control, economic growth stimulation, and job creation, among other critical socio-economic concerns.
The Senate also called for legislation to define the taxing rights of the three levels of government, thereby clarifying fiscal matters and enforcing consequences for violations of monetary and fiscal provisions.
These amendments and resolutions demonstrate the Senate’s commitment to enhancing electoral processes, national security, and economic recovery in Nigeria as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
