Adeyeye E. Ajayi, a personal aide to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has debunked the widespread rumours circulating on social media that the former Head of State has passed away, News About Nigeria gathered.
In a brief statement released late Monday night, Ajayi reassured the public that General Gowon is very much alive and in good health, firmly stating that he is ‘still around and well’ and ‘not in a hurry to go anywhere’.
Additionally, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, the Delta State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party during the last general election, has also refuted the speculations regarding the demise of the former Head of State.
Gbagi, through his Chief Press Secretary, Orusi Kenneth, dismissed the purported death as the work of ‘mischief makers’.
Gbagi further clarified that General Gowon is alive, in excellent health, and presently residing in London.
He said, “General Gowon is still much around with us, hale and hearty. He is not in a hurry to go anywhere.”
“I, Gbagi, just spoke with him. I hereby refute the rumour of the death of my friend, General Gowon.
“He has communicated to Nigerians that he is still much around, hale and hearty. Gowon is alive,” Gbagi insisted.
Gowon was born on October 19, 1934. He served as the Head of State between August 1, 1966 and July 29, 1975. Gowon took over power at the age of 31 – the youngest Nigeria’s head of state.
He ruled the country during a civil war that lasted for more than two years.
