The Governor of Gombe State Muhammad Yahaya has issued an order for the closure of all nightclubs in the state, citing concerns of “incessant immorality,” News About Nigeria understands.

The development was announced in a statement by Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi.

The statement reads in part, “Governor Yahaya has consequently, ordered the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the ‘Operation Hattara’ to mobilize their personnel to effect the directive and ensure strict compliance.”

This directive comes after a meeting with the Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, and other traditional rulers.

Governor Yahaya expressed his concern over the negative impact of nightclubs on the moral values of young people in the state, emphasizing the need to take action to promote good morals and values among the youth.

It is worth noting that this is not the first instance of a Nigerian state taking such action. In 2019, the Kano State government also ordered the closure of nightclubs and similar entertainment venues in the state due to perceived “immoral activities.”

The decision has sparked a range of reactions among the residents of Gombe State. While some have applauded the governor’s move as a step towards promoting good morals and values, others view it as an encroachment on personal freedoms.

One resident expressed a balanced perspective, stating, “I think it’s a good thing that the governor is taking action to promote good morals and values among our youth. But at the same time, I think people should be free to make their own choices about how they spend their time.”

Some of the affected nightclubs include Jami’a Gidan Wanka located at Mile 3 Yola Road, Gombe, and White House Theatre (Babban Gida) located at New Mile 3 Yola Road, Gombe.

Others are Gidan Lokaci General Merchant located at Mile 3 Reservoir Road, Gombe and Farin Gida Entertainment II located at Wuro Karal, Kalshingi Road, Gombe.
