Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has authorised the Department of State Services (DSS) to hold a suspected terrorist, Ibrahim Nasiru, in custody for 60 days.
News About Nigeria reports that this 60-day detention period will commence on August 27, to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the numerous allegations against him.
On Tuesday, Justice Lifu delivered this ruling in response to an ex-parte application submitted by the DSS, which was argued by their counsel, Barrister Yunusa Idris Umar.
The lawyer explained that the suspect was taken into custody on July 29 and initially brought before a Magistrate Court in Abuja, where an initial detention order was obtained.
However, the DSS required additional time to investigate the suspect’s involvement in a series of terror-related activities.
Due to security concerns, the specifics of these activities were not disclosed in open court.
The lawyer urged the judge to grant the DSS’s request in the interest of national security.
After reviewing the documentary evidence presented, Justice Lifu ordered the suspect’s detention for 60 days to allow for further questioning and investigation.
On August 24, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted applications filed by the police to remand 124 arrested #EndBadGovernance protesters for 60 days pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Justice Emeka Nwite, in separate rulings on ex-parte motions moved by Ibrahim Mohammed, counsel for the Inspector-General (IG) of Police, granted the interim order to remand the suspects until the conclusion of an investigation.
They were alleged to have committed acts of terrorism, treason, and treasonable felonies, including arson and terrorism.
