Human Rights Lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called for the prosecution of those behind the invasion of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office in Abuja by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), News About Nigeria reports.
He made this call in a statement on Monday while reacting to the invasion.
Falana noted that the invasion by the DSS is unlawful, especially as SERAP is a human rights defender’s office.
He also condemned the action, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prosecute whoever was responsible for carrying out the invasion in the name of the government.
He maintained that human Rights defenders must be allowed to freely carry out their work, consistent with the Nigerian Constitution.
He stated, “I condemn the invasion of SERAP’s office.
“The Tinubu government must urgently fish out the officers who carried out the invasion of SERAP’s office in the name of the government.
“Anyone found to be responsible for the invasion must be prosecuted. The government must allow human rights defenders to freely carry out their work, consistent with the Nigerian Constitution.”
Recall that the SERAP office was invaded by the operatives of the DSS on Monday, leading to an outcry from various individuals and organisations.
Organisations like Amnesty International, and several other individuals, including, Senator Shehu Sani, and Omoyele Sowore, among others, have condemned the act in strong terms, demanding justice for the human rights defenders.
In a statement, SERAP also called on President Bola Tinubu to give a directive calling for the withdrawal of the operatives.
