Opposition Lawmakers Back Emir Sanusi, Urge FG To Avoid Destabilising Kano State

The G-60 Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, comprising members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), has called on the Federal Government to respect the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and allow him to reign peacefully.

News About Nigeria reports that the lawmakers made the disclosure in a statement signed by Hon. Obi Aguocha (LP) and Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere (PDP) on Sunday.

According to the coalition, the federal government should not interfere in the chieftaincy affairs of Kano State, which it said falls under the purview of the state government.

The lawmakers therefore expressed their support for the Kano State Government’s decision to reinstate Emir Sanusi, whose initial removal and banishment were seen as an attack on the traditional institution.

They urged the Federal Government to avoid destabilising the already fragile North-western State by respecting the state government’s authority in chieftaincy matters.

The lawmakers also expressed concern over alleged federal security outfits’ involvement in facilitating the return of dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero to the palace.

They said, “We were taken aback by the alleged role of some top federal security outfits in facilitating the return of Bayero to the palace by providing him with two private jets, but since they had denied the claim, let’s give them the benefit of doubt.

“We cannot fold our hands, and indeed, many Nigerians will not just look away and allow the traditional institution, which is the repository of our cultural heritage, to be trampled upon by anyone or institution using federal machinery sustained by taxpayer money.”

The development comes after Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Emir Sanusi following the repeal of the Kano State Emirates Council Law.

It can be recalled that Emir Sanusi led Jumat prayers at the Government House before moving to the palace but dethroned Emir Bayero arrived in the state and settled into a mini palace shortly after.

The Kano State Government later ordered Bayero’s arrest, citing his involvement in fueling tension. However, the police shunned the directive of the state government and announced their intention to obey a court order restraining the government from reinstating Emir Sanusi.
