Governor Siminalayi Fubara has submitted a list of commissioner-nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly for approval, amidst the ongoing political tensions in the state.

News About Nigeria reports that the nominees are scheduled to undergo screening today, Tuesday, by Assembly members loyal to the governor.

The release by the state assembly read:

5. Hon. Elloka Tasie Amadi
6. Hon. Basoene Joshua Benibo
7. Mr. Tambari Sydney Gbara, and
8. Dr. Ovy Orluideye Chinendum Chukwuma

Date: Tuesday, 21 May, 2024
Time: 10:00 am.

“The venue is at the Hallowed Chamber, Rivers State House of Assembly, Auditorium, Admin. Block, Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt.

“The nominees are to come along with twelve (12) sets of their Curriculum Vitae (CV) and, the originals and photocopies of their credentials.”

This development comes after some commissioners loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, resigned their positions following the breakdown of the President Bola Tinubu peace accord.

Among those who resigned are the commissioners for education and housing, Professor Chinedu Mmon and Gift Worlu, respectively, who cited a toxic working environment as the reason for their actions.

Last week, the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to Governor Fubara, screened and confirmed Dagogo Iboroma as Commissioner-designate. Iboroma, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was confirmed by the lawmakers led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt.

The political tensions in the state have been attributed to the frosty relationship between Governor Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike.

According to Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to Governor Fubara, the root cause of the political tensions is the attempt by 11 individuals to hijack the state’s resources and allocate them to themselves, which has led to the ongoing political crisis in the state.
