Lagos Governor Confirms Closure Of Dosunmu Market After Fire Incident

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the closure of Dosunmu Market in Lagos Island following a fire incident that occurred on Tuesday.

News About Nigeria earlier reported that after the fire incident, the Lagos State Government directed the suspension of commercial activities at Dosumu Street and its environs, noting that it was to avoid a repetition of such an occurrence.

The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Central Business Distress, CBD, Mrs. Bola Olumegbon Lawal, made the announcement when she led a delegation to the scene for a spot assessment of the situation.

The blaze engulfed at least 14 buildings, resulting in the collapse of four structures.

The fire outbreak was attributed to the careless refuelling of a generator in the penthouse of one of the buildings.

On his Facebook page on Thursday, the governor shared images from his visit and noted the government’s response to the incident.

He stated, “We have initiated a full investigation to determine the cause and implement stricter safety protocols.”

Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of conducting integrity tests on standing structures and enforcing building regulations to prevent future tragedies.

The governor stated that Dosunmu Market will remain closed until safety measures are put in place and compliance with regulations is ensured.

Sanwo-Olu assured affected individuals that the government is committed to providing assistance and preventing similar incidents in the future.

The fire, which started around 10 am on Tuesday, resulted in the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.

It originated in a three-storey building on Jankara Street before spreading to neighbouring structures within the market area.
