Appeal Court Sacks Kaduna Speaker, Orders Rerun In 15 Polling Units

The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been sacked by the Court of Appeal, News About Nigeria reports.

The dismissed speaker was formerly a member representing Makera Constituency in Kaduna South Local Government Area.

In the same development, the court of appeal ordered that the certificate of return given to the speaker be withdrawn by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and fresh elections be conducted in 5 polling units.

Recall that Hon. Solomon Katuka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier filed a petition before the tribunal countering the election that the Speaker, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman of the APC representing Makera Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, won.

According to Katuka, there were gross irregularities regarding the election of the Speaker, and he insisted that he had won the election and was the rightful person to become the speaker.

Katuka had filed a cross-appeal seeking an outright declaration after the speaker, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman of the APC in the state, and INEC had appealed against the judgment of the tribunal, which, in September, nullified the election of the Speaker and ordered a rerun in 42 polling units in 5 Wards.

The three-member panel led by Justice I. O Adejumo, Justice A. O Oyetula, and Justice P. An Obiora had, in a harmonious decision, declared the decision of the tribunal void and ordered a rerun in 42 polling units.

However, the Appeal Court granted the prayers of the PDP candidate, Hon. Solomon Katuka, and ordered a rerun in 5 polling units in the constituency.
