The Rivers State Police Command, on Monday, debunked claims of an assassination attempt on the factional Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Edison Ehie.

According to the police, what happened at Ehie’s residence was a normal routine police patrol.

The clarification was made by the state Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

News About Nigeria had reported that armed men dressed in police uniforms invaded Ehie’s residence in Port Harcourt around 11 pm on Sunday night.

The incident was disclosed in a statement signed by the Legislative Correspondent of the State House of Assembly, Ken Uchendu, who described the attack as an assassination attempt.

Ken further explained that the invaders were, however, repelled from gaining entrance into the compound by the lawmaker’s security details.

Reacting to the claims, the Rivers state Commissioner of Police disclosed that preliminary investigations carried out did not reveal any attempt to assassinate the lawmaker.

“The preliminary investigation we have done so far this morning has not revealed any assassination attempt,” he clarified.

He further explained that the police officers who visited Ehie’s residence were on their routine convoy patrol which was not in any way connected with assassination.

The Rivers CP also charged Ehie and the general public to remain calm and not worry, saying that he is safe as the police were just carrying out their assignment.

He further asked the lawmaker to assist the police with any other relevant information about the incident that would also aid in their ongoing investigation.
