Former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani asserts that the Godwin Emefiele-led CBN was the most fraudulent Central Bank in the history of Nigeria, News About Nigeria reports.
Making this assertion in a tweet, on Saturday, Mr. Sani said that the CBN under Ex-President Muhammadu was the most fraudulent institution of government in the history of Nigeria.
Mr. Sani wondered how the apex bank could be corrupt under the president who had consistently accused his predecessors of state heists.
“The CBN under Buhari is the most opaque and fraudulent institution of Government in the history of Nigeria if what we read is the true situation of the Apex Bank. How did this happen under a man who has historically accused his predecessors of state heists,” Mr. Sani said.
He made this statement when the former head of the top bank was being tried for illegally possessing weapons.
In the run-up to the 2023 general election, the Mr. Emefiele-led top bank changed the country’s currency and put limitations on daily withdrawals in an effort to compel Nigeria to adopt a cashless system.
The apex bank claimed that the action was part of its effort to stop anyone from buying votes during the general election.
However, Mr. Emefiele was arrested by the State Security Service when President Bola Tinubu took power, and he has since been involved in many legal battles as he seeks legal means to regain freedom from DSS custody.
Political analysts have earlier forecasted that Emefiele will be victimized if Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election. It was widely believed that the naira redesign policy and the cash withdrawal limit were set to frustrate the presidential ambition of the former Lagos governor.
