Manchester United are set to step up their interest in Atalanta striker Rasmus Højlund, News About Nigeria understands.

The move comes less than 48 hours after United confirmed the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea for £ 55 million.

Erik ten Hag is looking to improve on his current squad, after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League towards the end of the last campaign.

The club’s manager at the end of last season said he will need a competitive team to fight for the Europe’s elite title and has since made his way into the summer transfer market, closing the deal for Mount with English rivals Chelsea.

However, his top priority remains to get a number nine and the club believe Danish international Hojlund, is the most affordable option on the table.

The 20-year-old currently enjoys an impressive career at Serie A club Atalanta.

The Red Devils are said to have already held initial talks with the club over a potential fee and will now target a second Serie A player after negotiating with Inter Milan for goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Recall that United started the summer with an eye for Harry Kane but withdrew their interest after Tottenham made it clear they would not sell the player to a Premier League rival.

However, German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich have pushed to sign the talented England striker for a fee that has now been met with contempt by several English football legends.

Meanwhile, United are weary because of FFP (Financial Fair Play) as reports reveal. It is expected they would need to sell a few players, in order to engage in a bumper signing in the current summer transfer window.
