Nigeria’s Akpoma Nominated for English Championship ‘Player of the Month’ Award Again

Nigerian-born Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom has been nominated for the English Championship Player of the Month award for the month of March, making it the third time he has been nominated for the award, after winning it last in December 2022.

The 1995-born and former Arsenal striker will contest the award with Viktor Gyokeres of Coventry City, Ki-Jana Hoever of Stoke City Burnley’s and Nathan Tella.

Middlesbrough, currently seat third in the league table, winning three out of their last four league fixtures in March. The club continues its push for promotion to the Premier League.

Akpom has remained the top scorer in the Championship, and was instrumental in his club’s outstanding performance in March, scoring in each one of the stated four games. He netted a total of five goals in the month, with one assist.

The Former England youth international has been applauded by his coach Michael Carrick, Manchester United legend who has also been nominated for the Manager of the Month award category.

Carrick has now been nominated four times for the monthly managerial award since taking charge at Middlesbrough in October.

The gaffer is in the race with Rob Edwards (Luton Town), Alex Neil (Stoke City) and Mark Robins (Coventry City).

Carrick’s coaching career started all most immediately after his retirement. He was handed a position on José Mourinho’s coaching staff, alongside Kieran McKenna; both were filling the void left by former assistant manager Rui Faria, who opted to begin his own spell in management.

Should Middlesbrough maintain their current third position till the end of the season, they will be migrating to the Premier League with Burnley and Sheffield, should both teams also maintain their present positions.
