Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda.

News About Nigeria reports that the decision was made on Monday after weeks of leadership disputes within the Assembly.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was nominated for the position by Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1.

After his nomination, he took the oath of office, reclaiming the position he lost in January 2025.

Obasa has been a member of the Lagos Assembly since 2007 and first became Speaker in June 2015.

His leadership was cut short earlier this year when lawmakers voted to remove him, citing allegations of misconduct.

His deputy at the time, Meranda, was elected as Speaker, making history as the first woman to lead the legislative body in Lagos.

However, Obasa did not accept his removal, arguing that due process was not followed.

He claimed he was not present when the decision was made and criticized the heavy security presence at the Assembly during the process.

Lawmakers loyal to Meranda stood their ground, stating that his removal was final.

The crisis escalated on February 17 when security personnel and legislative staff clashed at the Assembly Complex.

Lawmakers later adjourned indefinitely after expressing their support for Meranda.

On February 27, Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly, accompanied by armed security operatives.

Despite resistance from his colleagues, he insisted that he was still the Speaker.

Days later, Meranda resigned, paving the way for Obasa’s re-election.

Giving reasons for her resignation, Meranda said as she fought back tears,

“This decision was not made lightly; it came after careful deliberation, fully aware of the intrigues surrounding my election as speaker. We are the representatives of the good people of Lagos, entrusted with a mandate to protect our democracy.

“I have chosen to resign to uphold the integrity of this institution. I made history as the first female speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly and deeply cherished the solidarity freely offered to me during my tenure.”
