Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election has lamented the fact that Nigerians keep going to church when the country is in shambles, News About Nigeria reports.

Obi further noted that night vigils should be turned into night shifts so that Nigerians can be more productive and move the country forward.

The former Anambra State Governor shared these views during Saturday’s edition of the Honest Bunch podcast.

Obi further stated that having only politics and church as the primary activities in the country is a formula for poverty.

He said, “I’m not happy with the situation in Nigeria. We can’t keep breeding poverty. The only productive things here are politics and church, and that’s why we’re going to dismantle it. We’ll turn night vigil into night shifts so people can have productive shifts. I go to church and believe in God, but we can’t have people in church from Monday to Friday.

“If I travel from here to my house, the only signboards I see are for churches. If you go to the East, it’s mostly burials—and that’s not a country.”

Speaking on Nigeria’s economy, Obi criticized President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for engaging in blame-game politics, noting that if they were unprepared to address the issues, they should not have run for office.

He also expressed disappointment in the President’s frequent borrowings, adding that it is troubling that they cannot account for the funds.
