Following the indefinite strike initiated by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU) on Monday, the Federal Government has released funds to settle outstanding salaries.
The FG has also allocated funds for the payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
This was made known in a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), Bawa Mokwa, on Saturday.
In the statement, Mokwaa revealed that NASU members have started receiving their payments as many are already confirming receipt.
The statement reads in part, “The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salaries of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities. According to the OAGF, the Federal Government has also released funds for the payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector.
“The OAGF stated that payments to the Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities had commenced, with many confirming receipt.”
The OAGF further stated that the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government is committed to the welfare of workers and retirees across the country.
The Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU had embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday over four months of withheld salaries, a move that has since disrupted academic activities in universities nationwide.
SSANU and NASU reported that university executives, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, had also gone four months without salaries.
