The Nigeria Police Force has announced an investigation into an incident in the Maitama area of Abuja, where Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member, allegedly assaulted a Bolt driver.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Monday confirming the case, which is currently under the jurisdiction of the FCT Command following an official report by the driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident between a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja. The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.”

It further urged the public to avoid using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police for intimidation, stating that such actions compromise the values of impartiality upheld by the IGP’s office.

News About Nigeria reported that the incident, captured in a video that went viral on social media, shows Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, physically assaulting and verbally abusing the driver.

Reportedly, the altercation began when the driver requested that Ikwechegh come to his car to collect a delivered item.

The lawmaker then allegedly slapped the driver multiple times, broke his phone, tore his clothes, and threatened to make him “disappear from Nigeria,” even if he were to contact the Inspector General of Police.

Ikwechegh reportedly refused to pay for the service and claimed his position as a lawmaker, further threatening to detain the driver in a generator room as punishment for what he perceived as disrespect.
