The President Bola Tinubu-led government has finally revealed why it sacked six ministers from its cabinet yesterday (Wednesday).
News About Nigeria recalls that the President announced the sack of the Minister of Women Affairs, Barr. Uju-Ken Ohanenye; Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John; Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman; Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo; and Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim yesterday.
Also, President Tinubu formally sacked the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Betta Edu.
Giving reasons for their sack on Thursday, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, revealed that the decision followed a careful assessment process led by Hadiza Bala Usman, the President’s Social Adviser on Policy.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV, Onanuga explained that the appraisal was not taken lightly and had been part of the president’s plan since the ministers were sworn in last year.
According to him, Hadiza was assigned the task of overseeing a performance appraisal, which involved gathering public feedback on the ministers’ work.
He further disclosed that a technology-driven process was employed, allowing Nigerians to score the ministers based on their effectiveness.
He said, “The assessment was not taken lightly. This was part of the President’s long-term strategy to evaluate his cabinet and ensure only high-performing ministers remain. Hadiza brought technology to it, asking Nigerians to score the ministers. The results were based on empirical facts, the public perception of these ministers, and it was the people who actually did the scorecard. The President acted on those results. President Tinubu had always said he would not hesitate to remove ministers who do not meet expectations. This decision is about accountability and ensuring progress in key areas of governance.”
