The Federal Government’s Technical Subcommittee on Dam Evaluation has confirmed that the Gubi Dam in Bauchi State is in good condition after an inspection on Wednesday.
Led by Aliyu Ibrahim, the Director of Dams and Reservoir Operations at the Ministry of Water Resources, the team assessed the dam as part of a nationwide evaluation following the collapse of a structure at Alau Dam in Borno State.
Addressing journalists after the inspection, Ibrahim explained that the nationwide assessment was initiated to prevent similar incidents.
He stated that, based on physical examination, the Gubi Dam appears to be in good shape, with all essential features intact.
He mentioned that structures protecting the dam’s stability, such as wave breakers, were fully functional. However, further assessments would be necessary to determine the dam’s internal condition.
The committee plans to provide recommendations to the federal government after completing evaluations of other dams across the country.
This follows recent flooding in parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, after the Alau Dam’s collapse.
Meanwhile, News About Nigeria reported that the Ogun State Government has urged residents domiciled in areas prone to flooding across the state to relocate immediately.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, made this call on Wednesday in response to the flooding situation in the areas.
He noted that this is a repetition of the call that was made a few months ago, adding that it is for safety reasons and an avoidal of the loss of lives and properties to the flood.
Some of the communities affected by the recent release of water from Oyan Dam include Isheri, Riverview Estate, Oshorun Estate, OPIC Estate, Arepo, Mawere, Akute, Alagbole, Orimerunmu, and Magboro, among others.
The government urged residents in these areas to heed its earlier flood alert advisory to either relocate or elevate their homes during this time of year.
